The hotel has a rich and traditional past and is the oldest in Gangtok, in the state of Sikkim. Norkhill in Sikkimese means ""House of Jewels"", and the hotel was built by the king in 1932 to receive and entertain heads of state, diplomats, and other dignitaries. The walls of the building are decorated with lucky motives of dragons and flames as well as thangka paintings. To this are added elaborate tables and side tables, Bachu and Chocsue, creating a highly folkloristic ambience. Facilities on offer at the hotel include a lobby area, a safe, a currency exchange facility, a conference room, a bar, and a restaurant.
